About marottes

The word marotte is borrowed from the French. In medieval times it referred to a stick or scepter with a head carved on it and was called a “scepter de bouffon” or fools scepter.

A marotte was carried by a jester or court fool and used as a prop for his antics. Later usage of the word came to refer to a fad or craze. The marotte head generally resembled the jester that was carrying it and his costume.

These half figures on rods later became children's toys. When shaken gently, they would either spin in a circle activating a music box, stay motionless and chime, or if bells were attached, simply ring.
